Hear what we’re doing in lieu of travelling to San Francisco for Biotech Showcase and BIO at JP Morgan

14 Dec 20

tranScrip are delighted to be attending Biotech Showcase and BIO at JP Morgan, albeit, a little differently this year.

Every year, tranScrip choose a charity to donate to. This year, tranScrip is donating to two charities that focus on making a positive impact on climate change and that raise funds for research in respiratory diseases, especially those impacted by environmental challenge.

Respiratory disease charity

We have chosen to donate to Asthma, Allergy & Inflammation Research which raises funds for research in the field of asthma, allergy and inflammatory conditions of the lungs at the University of Southampton. Their contributions include the original research on the use of inhaled interferon beta as a treatment for viral disease, now in development for the treatment of COVID-19.

The travel restrictions and local lockdowns that have been seen all over the world due to COVID-19 has meant that we have been unable to travel to conferences.

This has allowed us time to reflect on the effect attending conferences has on the environment.

This year we have seen a dramatic drop in the amount of carbon we are producing. As we move into 2021 and with the discussion of some conferences potentially transitioning back to face-2-face, we wanted to make sure we continue to be environmentally conscious and offset any carbon we produce.

What we are doing with the money we would have spent on travelling

In lieu of not travelling to San Francisco this year, tranScrip will be planting a tree for every partner meeting we hold at Biotech Showcase and BIO at JP Morgan, as a means of trying to offset some of the CO2 emissions caused by travelling to conferences.

Carbon Footprint allows you to directly offset the amount of carbon you have used by various projects.

One way is to plant trees in the UK. They even allow you to pick the region so trees can be planted in your local community.

How much carbon we are looking to offset

A round trip to San Francisco for two people generates 11 tons of CO2 emissions. To offset this amount of carbon we would need to plant 11 trees.

Between January 2019 and March 2020, tranScrip produced 77 tons of CO2 emissions as a direct result from flying to various conferences. To offset we would need to plant 77 trees.
